2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Extra thickness on the designer's initials JFM and the word AMERICA identifies this 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die reverse, designated WDDR-004 by the Wexler Team. The JFM initials belong to Lyndall Bass (maiden initials JFM), who designed the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010 as the permanent successor to the four 2009 Bicentennial reverses. Two diagnostic die markers aid attribution: on the obverse, a small die gouge appearing as a dot sits to the right of the R in IN GOD WE TRUST, while the reverse carries a die chip south of the R in PLURIBUS. These positional markers help differentiate WDDR-004 from other doubled die reverses in the Shield Cent series. The Shield reverse design — featuring a prominent Union Shield with horizontal lines representing the original thirteen states — replaced Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse after fifty-one years. Lincoln Shield Cents continue Brenner's 1909 obverse portrait, now paired with a reverse that explicitly echoes Civil War-era symbolism honoring Lincoln's preservation of the Union. Struck on copper-plated zinc at 19mm. Check JFM and AMERICA for the telltale extra thickness, and confirm with the die gouge near R in TRUST and the chip below R in PLURIBUS.
