2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2013-P 25¢ SD WDDR-031, this doubled die reverse variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 2013 Mount Rushmore America the Beautiful quarter, part of the South Dakota release in the ATB program that ran from 2010 through 2021. The ATB quarter was struck in the standard clad composition with a copper core bonded between outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. The primary doubling shows on the lower part of Thomas Jefferson's nose on the Mount Rushmore sculpture depicted on the reverse, a subtle variety that requires careful examination under magnification. Obverse die markers include thin north-south die scratches through the RTY in LIBERTY, a curved die gouge in the lower opening of the R in DOLLAR, a die gouge between the U and A in QUARTER, and a die gouge between the C and A in AMERICA. Reverse die markers feature a die crack extending north from the suspended worker's right foot, a distinctive diagnostic that helps pinpoint this specific die among the many reverse dies used for the Mount Rushmore design. A die gouge to the left of the top of the leftmost scaffolding post provides additional confirmation. The Mount Rushmore quarter reverse was designed by Joseph Menna and depicts the carved presidential faces with scaffolding and a worker in the foreground, commemorating the iconic South Dakota monument. The WDDR-031 designation number reflects the considerable number of doubled die varieties cataloged for the 2013-P South Dakota ATB quarter, a testament to the detailed examination these modern quarters receive from the variety collecting community.
