2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-030

Description

Honoring the iconic presidential monument in South Dakota, this Mount Rushmore Quarter doubled die reverse exhibits doubling on the lower part of Thomas Jefferson's nose within the carved-mountain design. The obverse carries a wealth of die markers: a short die crack across the base of the bust above the left side of the D in DOLLAR, a large die gouge left of the A in QUARTER, gouges above the right side of the B in LIBERTY and between the bottom of D and O in DOLLAR, two gouges around the top of the last L in DOLLAR, gouges inside the U and right of the T in UNITED, and another inside the upper opening of E in UNITED. The reverse adds a die crack extending north from the suspended worker's right foot, a die gouge in the field left of Washington's mouth on the carved mountain, and a gouge left of the worker standing on the scaffolding. This extensive constellation of die markers makes attribution straightforward despite the subtle nature of the doubling itself.
