Description
The 2012 (W) Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of just 7,027, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. The gold coin in the Star-Spangled Banner program, this $5 piece depicts the naval warfare that preceded the bombardment of Fort McHenry. The obverse features a naval battle scene from the War of 1812, with an American ship in the foreground and a damaged British ship in the background, while the reverse displays the first words of the Star-Spangled Banner anthem in Francis Scott Key's handwriting against 15 stars and 15 stripes. Designed by Donna Weaver/Richard Masters. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #511547.
