Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1969 / DMR-005, the 2012 DDR-004 appears on the Philadelphia Denali National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series. This variety shows light spread to the west, producing a subtle extra contour on the lower back of the Dall sheep's neck — the animal featured prominently on the Denali quarter reverse. Confirmed at Late Die State (Stage C), this die saw extended service before documentation, and specimens may exhibit additional die wear or flow lines alongside the hub doubling. The Denali quarter honors Denali National Park in Alaska, with the reverse depicting a Dall sheep standing on a ridge before the towering peak of North America's tallest mountain. Light-spread doubling on the curved neck contour of the ram requires careful examination to distinguish from die deterioration, as the soft organic lines of the animal's anatomy can blur subtly as dies wear. The Late Die State confirmation means early-state examples from this die — potentially showing sharper doubling before wear set in — may exist but have not been separately documented.
