2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team with no other known cross-references, WDDR-012 on the 2012-P Denali National Park quarter is one of at least twelve doubled die reverse varieties cataloged for this single ATB issue. The Denali reverse, designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts a Dall sheep standing atop a rocky ridge with Denali (formerly Mount McKinley) rising in the background — North America's tallest peak rendered in the compact 24.3mm quarter format. Hub doubling on this design can appear on the mountain's ridgelines, the sheep's form, the lettering, or the rocky foreground, and each WDDR number documents a distinct die with a unique combination of spread direction and affected elements. Philadelphia produced this issue as part of the fifth year of the America the Beautiful program, which generated enormous collector interest and correspondingly intense die variety research. The concentration of twelve or more WDDR listings for a single ATB reverse suggests that the production process for these detailed scenic reverses — with their complex topographical features and varied surface textures — may have been particularly susceptible to the slight hub misalignments that produce attributable doubled dies.
