2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Submitted by Daniel Ksycki, the 2012 WDDR-009 is a doubled die reverse variety on the Philadelphia-struck Denali National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series. The doubling is visible on the back of the Dall sheep's neck, one of the central design elements depicting Alaska's premier national park with its iconic wildlife set against the backdrop of North America's tallest peak. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge above the G in GOD and another small die gouge north of the O in GOD. The Wexler designation for this variety is 2012-P 25¢ AK WDDR-009. Denali National Park, formerly known as Mount McKinley National Park, features over six million acres of wild Alaskan landscape where Dall sheep navigate steep mountain terrain. The quarter's reverse design captures a Dall sheep in profile, and the doubling on the neck area is best observed under magnification where the extra thickness of the fur lines becomes apparent. Collectors should use the obverse die gouges near GOD as confirmation markers after spotting the neck doubling.
