Description

A quarter from the Denver Mint, the 2012 (D) El Yunque National Park Quarter belongs to the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 25 million examples, making this ranked 11th of 16 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a Coqui tree frog on a leaf with a Puerto Rican parrot behind an epiphyte plant. El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and is home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $3 depending on grade and condition.
