The 2011 Fallen Heroes of 9/11 Pentagon medal in 38mm bronze is a standard-size duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the military and civilian personnel at the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001 attacks. This smaller format was produced alongside the 76mm version to offer collectors a more affordable option for obtaining a bronze replica of the original gold presentation piece authorized by Public Law 112-76. The obverse reproduces Joel Iskowitz's frontal perspective of the Pentagon building at 38mm diameter, with Phebe Hemphill's sculpting capturing the five-sided structure in reduced scale. The inscriptions FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11 and SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 frame the architectural scene, with THE PENTAGON identifying this as the medal honoring the 184 lives lost when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building's western facade. The reverse carries Don Everhart's unified shield-and-wreath design shared across all three 9/11 Congressional Gold Medal issues, with ACT OF CONGRESS 2011 around the border. The 38mm format is the traditional size for U.S. Mint bronze medal duplicates, matching the diameter used for presidential and other congressional medal programs. While the smaller scale necessarily reduces some of the architectural detail visible on the 76mm version, the essential design elements remain legible.
