SKH-1c-2010-07 Spiked Head
Error
Description
Appearing in the inaugural year of the Lincoln Shield Cent, SKH-1c-2010-07 is cross-referenced as JCc-2010_018 in the Jim Caldwell catalog. The Shield Cent reverse designed by Lyndall Bass replaced the four 2009 Bicentennial reverses with a permanent union shield motif, and 2010 marked the first full production year under this new design. Spiked heads on early Shield Cents hold transitional interest — they document die surface behavior on freshly adopted hub designs before the Mint's tooling had fully adjusted to new production templates. The seventh cataloged spiked head for 2010-P confirms that die gouges near Lincoln's portrait occurred with regularity even as the reverse underwent its historic redesign. The Caldwell cross-reference provides an independent identification pathway for collectors who prefer that framework. Philadelphia Mint production on zinc-core copper-plated planchets. The Shield Cent's bold geometric lines on the reverse contrast with the delicate portrait elements where spiked heads manifest. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
