Description

The 2009 (S) Proof Native American Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.2 million examples, making this ranked 6th of 11 mint variants by mintage, with 1% of production. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste Crapeau on her back and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring Native American contributions to the United States. The 2009 Native American Dollar honors the Three Sisters method of companion planting developed by Indigenous peoples, in which corn, beans, and squash are grown together. The reverse depicts a Native American woman planting seeds surrounded by the three crops. The reverse was redesigned annually beginning this year under the Native American $1 Coin Program, featuring different themes honoring Native American contributions. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $10. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #406945.
