Description

Designated as the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2009-S Proof Lincoln Cent Early Childhood issue, WDDR-001 comes from one of four special reverse designs produced during the Lincoln Bicentennial commemorating Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. The Early Childhood reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts a young Lincoln reading while seated on a log in frontier Indiana, representing his formative years of self-education. This was the second of the four 2009 designs, following Birth and Infancy and preceding Professional Life and Presidency. San Francisco proof versions were struck with particular care on specially prepared planchets, and the proof striking process can accentuate doubled die features by producing sharper design details against mirror-like fields.
