2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-P $1 SF JT WDDR-002 — designating this as a Philadelphia Mint Statue of Freedom reverse paired with a James Tyler (John Tyler) Presidential Dollar obverse — this variety exhibits doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe. Obverse die markers include light die scratches running from SW to NE in the field to the left of the upper head, a short die scratch from SW to NE in the field to the right of the chin, and a short die scratch from NW to SE in the field to the right of the nose. The reverse carries a die crack running across the top of the lower three fingers on the left hand of the Statue of Liberty. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2009-P $1 SF JT WDDR-002 with no other known references. The Presidential Dollar program (2007-2016) featured four different presidents per year on rotating obverse designs, with the Statue of Liberty common reverse designed by Don Everhart serving as the standard reverse for the entire series. The 2009 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass composition — 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel — producing the distinctive golden color characteristic of the series. Each coin weighs 8.1 grams with a diameter of 26.5 mm and a smooth edge bearing incuse lettering including the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The doubling on the Statue of Liberty's arm above the sleeve creates a visible displacement in an area with clear fabric fold detail, making it identifiable under moderate magnification.
