Description

Sixth in the reverse doubled die census for a 2009 DC & US Territories quarter, DDR-006 exhibits light southward spread manifesting as an extra cloud positioned to the right of the upper tower on the reverse design. The DC & US Territories quarter program in 2009 extended the successful State Quarters concept to honor the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands — six designs released across the year before the America the Beautiful series began in 2010. The tower and cloud motif on the affected territory's reverse provides a scenic composition where architectural and atmospheric elements intersect, and the light southward spread displaced the secondary cloud impression downward relative to the primary, creating a ghost cloud visible to the right of the tower. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2227 and DMR-008, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces are at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The comments identify this as a satin finish specimen — the matte-like surface treatment applied to coins included in 2005-2010 U.S. Mint uncirculated sets, produced using burnished blanks and laser-treated dies that created a distinctive soft luster different from both proof and standard business strike finishes. The satin finish designation means this DDR can be found specifically in 2009 Mint Sets rather than in general circulation strikes. Collectors searching for DDR-006 should acquire 2009 Mint Set specimens and examine the cloud formations near the upper tower under 10-15x magnification, looking for the displaced secondary cloud image below the primary.
