Description

Part of the DC and US Territories quarter program that concluded the decade-long rotating-reverse series, this 2009 Philadelphia Northern Mariana Islands quarter carries a doubled die reverse cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-002. The Northern Mariana Islands design features a latte stone, an mwar canoe, and a lei of plumeria flowers — cultural symbols of the Chamorro and Carolinian peoples of the Marianas archipelago. Doubled die errors on this intricate reverse can manifest across the curved lines of the lei, the angular edges of the latte stone, and the hull of the canoe, where even minor hub misalignment during die preparation leaves detectable traces. As only six territory and district designs were struck in 2009, each received comparatively less production than the annual five-state issues of previous years. Collectors pursuing complete territory quarter variety sets should examine the reverse elements under magnification, focusing on areas where the design's fine lines and curves would most readily reveal directional spread from a misaligned hub impression.
