In 2009, coins were struck at the Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints with a combined mintage of 90.4 million. This represents the lowest annual mintage in the entire series, below the series median of 1.2 billion. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing forward in a three-quarter view, the first forward-facing portrait on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays Monticello in a refined depiction. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry.
