2009-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-D 1¢ EC WDDR-012 (Early Childhood reverse design), this Lincoln Bicentennial Cent displays doubling at the top of log end number 5 — a specific diagnostic feature referenced against the numbered log end identification system used for the Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky reverse design, which depicts a young Abraham Lincoln reading before a log cabin. The attribution notes include estimated values of AU = $3, MS60 = $5, MS63 = $7, and MS65 = $10, placing this as a modestly valued but collectible doubled die variety. Obverse die markers are extensive: two parallel die scratches run from west-southwest to east-northeast below the L of LIBERTY, a die crack runs northwest through the eyebrow, and another die crack runs from northwest to southeast through the upper front of the forehead — indicating progressive structural failure in the obverse die's portrait area. The reverse exhibits lines radiating toward the rim throughout the letters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and a short die crack runs from southwest to northeast through the upper right corner of the cabin jutting slightly into the field. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, featuring the Early Childhood reverse designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Struck in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 2009-D cents were produced in lower quantities than typical years. The multiple die cracks on both the obverse and reverse document a die pair experiencing widespread structural degradation during its service life.
