Description

Sixteenth doubled die reverse cataloged for the 2009-D Lincoln Bicentennial Cent by VarietyVista, this variety shows a light spread West as an extra log end to log number 10 from the bottom on the Birth and Early Childhood reverse. While DDR-005 for the same date shows an East spread on the same log, DDR-016 exhibits the opposite directional displacement — West — indicating a different die with a distinct hubbing misalignment. Die markers UVC-3087 and DMR-018 identify this specific die pair, with Stage A showing both the reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS) and Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. The 2009 Bicentennial program's log cabin design, by Richard Masters, depicted the Kentucky cabin where Lincoln was born, and its individually rendered log ends served as precise gauges for detecting even slight hub displacement. Sixteen documented DDRs for the Denver Mint cabin design is a remarkably high count for a single-year commemorative reverse, reflecting both the intensity of collector interest in the bicentennial program and the mechanical reality that each die pair employed during Denver's substantial production run carried independent potential for hubbing error. The directional contrast between DDR-005 (East) and DDR-016 (West) on the same log end illustrates how different dies can exhibit opposite displacement vectors.
