2009-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3084 and DMR-015, the 2009-D Lincoln Bicentennial Cent DDR-013 exhibits medium spread directed east, manifesting as extra log ends on logs number 9 and 10 counting from the bottom of the log cabin depicted on the Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky reverse design. This reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, shows a one-room log cabin representing the type of dwelling where Abraham Lincoln was born near Hodgenville, Kentucky, in 1809 — making the log construction details historically meaningful as well as diagnostically useful. The eastward medium spread creates doubled end profiles on logs 9 and 10, producing the appearance of additional log ends protruding from the cabin wall. Three die stages are identified: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows a light die crack running southeast from the M of RM (the Richard Masters designer initials) with the obverse in early-to-mid die state, and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The die crack from the designer initials in Stage B provides a clean die state sequencing marker. The 2009-D Lincoln Bicentennial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter. The 13th cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2009-D Birth and Early Childhood design reflects the intensive variety scrutiny these historically significant one-year-only commemorative designs received from the error and variety collecting community.
