2009-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Fifth doubled die reverse cataloged by VarietyVista for the 2009-D Lincoln Bicentennial Cent, this variety shows a light spread East visible as an extra log end to log number 10 counted from the bottom of the log cabin on the Birth and Early Childhood reverse designed by Richard Masters. Die markers UVC-2776 and DMR-007 identify the specific die pair, with Stage A showing both the reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), and Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent program commemorated the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth with four rotating reverse designs depicting scenes from his life — the log cabin representing his 1809 birth in Kentucky. Denver struck these commemorative cents in copper-plated zinc composition, and the detailed cabin construction — with individually rendered logs, chinking, and structural elements — provided die variety researchers with numerous reference points for detecting hub displacement. Log ends proved especially sensitive indicators of doubling because their circular cross-sections show directional spread clearly. Five documented DDRs for the Denver Mint Birth and Early Childhood design reflects the concentrated attention this popular commemorative program received from variety specialists.
