2008 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista as DDR-001 under UVC-1712 and DMR-004, this 2008-P New Mexico State Quarter variety shows a medium spread on the middle of the right side of the lower left upright of the Zia Pueblo sun symbol on the reverse. The die is documented across three production stages. Stage A designates both reverse and obverse as EDS. Stage B, MDS, is marked by the reverse reaching MDS, a die chip between IN in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, a die crack on the forehead above the eye, and a die crack on the front of the bust. Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The New Mexico State Quarter reverse, designed by Don Everhart II, features the Zia Pueblo sun symbol against the state name and "Land of Enchantment." The Zia symbol's geometric uprights make it a suitable element for detecting hub doubling, as misalignment in the uprights is measurable. Stage B specimens with the die chip between IN and the two die cracks provide the most confirmable attribution. The 2008 New Mexico quarter is the 47th design in the 50 State Quarters program and is struck in standard clad composition at the Philadelphia Mint without a mintmark.
