2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and assigned Wexler Variety ID 2008-P WDDR-005, this fifth doubled die reverse for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows Class VIII tilted hub doubling below the triangle above the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from angular tilt between hub and die during hubbing, producing a distinctive rotational spread that differs from the more common lateral or pivotal shifts seen in other doubling classes. Obverse die markers include a small die dot to the right of Jefferson's nose, while the reverse displays a die depression above the designer's initials FS (Felix Schlag). The 2008-P Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Return to Monticello reverse era, restored in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey commemorative designs. Five documented WDDRs for 2008-P reflects the ongoing productivity of the Monticello reverse for doubled die research, where the precise architectural geometry of Jefferson's home amplifies even minor hub displacement into visible doubling.
