2008-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Centered on the Zia Pueblo sun symbol at the heart of New Mexico's State Quarter design, DDR-005 shows strong spread north as an extra partial curve and upright of the lower left upright of the Zia sun. The Zia symbol — a sacred emblem of the Zia Pueblo people representing the four cardinal directions — serves as the central reverse element, and the strong northward spread on its lower left ray creates a visible shadow doubling against the surrounding field. Cataloged as UVC-1894 with DMR-007, the variety has been documented at Stage A in early die state, with Stages B and C unconfirmed. This variety was found on a Satin Finish specimen from the 2008 Uncirculated Mint Set, giving it the distinctive matte surface treatment used for Mint Set coins from 2005 through 2010. Satin Finish State Quarters carry lower mintages than their circulation-strike counterparts, and doubled dies on these special-finish coins are proportionally less common in the surviving population.
