Description

Doubling on this 2008-D Lincoln Memorial Cent manifests on the lower left side of the seventh column to the right of the statue's legs within the Memorial facade. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2008-D 1¢ WDDR-004 and cross-referenced to Coppercoins 2008D-1DR-002, this variety carries dual attribution across two independent reference systems. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of the E in WE and a small die gouge below the right side of the D mintmark — useful screening points before examining the reverse. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits inside the upper E in AMERICA, and die pitting is visible below the left Memorial base. The 2008 Lincoln Memorial Cent was the penultimate year of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, replaced in 2009 by four rotating bicentennial designs. The column-specific doubling — affecting only the seventh column's lower left profile adjacent to the seated Lincoln statue — exemplifies the highly localized nature of many doubled die varieties.
