Description

Submitted by Andrew Miller and cataloged under the Wexler system as 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-011, this George Washington Presidential Dollar reverse die carries hub doubling concentrated at the intersection of the 2nd ray clockwise from the Statue of Liberty's head and the right arm of the figure. The doubling manifests as a secondary impression offset from the primary design elements at this junction point, where the converging lines of the ray and arm create enough geometric complexity for the misalignment to produce visible separation between the two hub impressions. Both the obverse and reverse were struck in Early Die State, with no significant die markers recorded on the obverse. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs from WNW to ESE above the right side of the U in UNITED — an incidental die preparation mark that serves as the primary attribution fingerprint for this specific reverse working die. The Presidential Dollar series, inaugurated in 2007 with the George Washington issue, was struck on manganese-brass clad planchets at 8.1 grams with a distinctive edge-lettered format carrying the date, mintmark, and motto. The Philadelphia Mint's production of the inaugural design reached approximately 176.7 million pieces, yet doubled die varieties on this issue remain scarce finds within the series. Examination under 7x to 10x magnification with directional lighting best reveals the doubling at the ray-arm intersection on this Wexler-attributed variety.
