2006-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-2995 and DMR-007, this 2006-D Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-005 displays medium spread westward manifesting as an extra column number 7 — the column spanning from the statue's hand to its shin — creating one of the more visually recognizable doubled die reverse patterns in the Memorial Cent series where a phantom column appears alongside the actual seventh column. Four die stages are documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS); Stage B at early-mid die state (EMDS) showing a die chip at the left top of column number 2 with the obverse also in EMDS; Stage C at mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage D at late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The four-stage progression from EDS through EMDS provides collectors with a detailed timeline of this die's service life, with the Stage B die chip on column 2 serving as the key transitional marker between the clean early state and later deteriorated states. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 2006 in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 2006-D was among the final Denver Mint Memorial Cent issues before the 2009 Bicentennial designs and 2010 Shield reverse replaced Gasparro's Memorial reverse that had served since 1959. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait. The extra column 7 doubling from hand to shin creates a diagnostic that is visible even under moderate magnification, as the doubled column introduces a vertical element that disrupts the regular spacing of the Memorial's colonnade.
