2005-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Discovered in Silver Proof Sets, DDR-002 on the 2005-S Jefferson Nickel features very strong spread manifesting as a secondary image of the three lowest left branches of the right tree, displaced into the field below the primary design. The ghostly duplication of branch structures in the open field makes this variety visually dramatic, as the secondary branches appear where no design elements should exist. VarietyVista catalogs this variety as UVC-1594 and DMR-003, with Stage A documenting both reverse and obverse in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The reverse carries the Ocean in View design commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition's first sighting of the Pacific Ocean — one of two special 2005 reverse designs in the Westward Journey Nickel Series. As a proof struck at San Francisco, the mirror fields provide stark contrast highlighting the displaced branch elements against the reflective background. Silver Proof Set specimens carry the added distinction of being struck on 90% silver planchets rather than standard copper-nickel, making DDR-002 a variety combining dramatic doubling with premium metallic content.
