2005-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

First cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2005-S Proof Oregon State Quarter, DDR-001 presents a medium spread on the tips of the first and second lowest left branches of the small tree on Oregon's reverse. VarietyVista assigns UVC-1679 and DMR-003. Oregon's reverse, designed by Donna Weaver, features Crater Lake — the deepest lake in the United States, formed in the caldera of the collapsed Mount Mazama volcano — with Wizard Island and surrounding conifers. The medium spread on the lower left tree branches indicates a secondary hub impression that shifted during die preparation, producing doubled contours on fine branch tips where the displacement is most readily detected. Branch tips serve as effective diagnostics because their narrow, tapered geometry amplifies even modest hub shift into visible separated outlines. This clad proof was struck at San Francisco on polished copper-nickel clad planchets at 24.3mm, part of the 50 State Quarters Program begun in 1999. Oregon was the thirty-third state honored.
