Description

Cataloged by Richard Ray and designated Wexler 2005 P WDDR-076 Business Strike Ocean in View, this doubled die reverse variety appears on the 2005-P Jefferson Nickel from the Westward Journey series. The Ocean in View reverse, designed by Joe Fitzgerald, depicts the view from Cape Disappointment that Lewis and Clark experienced upon reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1805, with the inscription "Ocean in view! O! The Joy!" adapted from William Clark's journal. The coin is struck in standard cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Die markers on the obverse include a large die chip in the lower portion of the E of WE and a die chip on the tip of Jefferson's nose. The reverse shows a die gouge or dot below the first S of STATES, die chips on the lower portions of U and 5 of PLURIBUS, and pre-die-chip impressions above the E and TS of CENTS, the V of FIVE, and the dot between 1805 and FIVE. The extensive array of die chips and gouges across both sides provides numerous authentication points for die-pair matching, making this variety relatively straightforward to confirm once a candidate coin is identified.
