Description

Attributed on the 2005 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel Ocean in View design, WDDR-016 represents one of the doubled die reverse varieties produced during the Westward Journey series that celebrated the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Ocean in View reverse, designed by Joe Fitzgerald, depicts a view of the Pacific coastline with the inscription OCEAN IN VIEW! O! THE JOY!, adapting William Clark's journal entry from November 1805. This unique reverse design created new opportunities for hub doubling to manifest on landscape and inscription elements unlike any previous Jefferson Nickel issue. Discovered by Tony Russo, the variety is cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 2005 P WDDR-016 Business Strike Ocean in View. The Westward Journey series nickels from 2004-2005 featured four distinct reverse designs, and the Ocean in View issue proved particularly productive for doubled die varieties due to its detailed landscape elements and extended inscription. Collectors examining 2005 Philadelphia business strike nickels for this variety should focus on the reverse design elements where hub doubling manifests as displaced coastline detail or shifted inscription lettering.
