Description

Recorded by VarietyVista with internal tracking code UVC-3056 and die marriage reference DMR-022, this 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a medium spread east manifesting as an extra column number 6 from hand to pedestal height. The eastward spread direction indicates the secondary hub impression was displaced to the right of the primary, creating a doubled column that appears as a shadow or ghost image alongside the original sixth column between the Lincoln statue and the left colonnade edge. Die stage documentation records four states: Stage A where both reverse and obverse are at early-to-mid die state, Stage B with the reverse at EMDS showing a medium die crack with die chip on the forehead also at EMDS, Stage C at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage D at late die state (unconfirmed). The early-to-mid die state confirmation for both dies in Stage A establishes that this variety's earliest known specimens already show some wear beyond pristine die condition, suggesting the dies had been in service before the variety was first identified by collectors. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter.
