2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-044
Error
Description
Forty-fourth in VarietyVista's doubled die reverse sequence for the 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent, this variety displays a medium spread West as an extra thin column number 7 running from hand to pedestal within the Lincoln Memorial. Die markers UVC-3195 and DMR-046 identify the specific die pair, with Stage A showing both the reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS), and Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. The high DMR number (046) indicates this die marker record encompasses a broad population of cataloged varieties for the 2005 date. Forty-four documented DDRs for a single year's cent production is a count that reflects both the enormous Philadelphia Mint output — hundreds of millions of cents consuming many die pairs — and the architectural complexity of the Memorial reverse design. Column number 7, situated to the right of the Lincoln statue, is one of twelve columns in Gasparro's representation of the Memorial, and the thin vertical lines of these columns serve as highly sensitive indicators of East-West hub displacement. The 2005 date falls in the final years of Memorial Cent production, which ended in 2008 after nearly fifty years. Each documented DDR represents a unique die that entered service with a detectable hubbing misalignment, and the cumulative catalog for 2005 alone rivals the total DDR count for some entire coin series.
