2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-021

Description

Cataloged as UVC-3081, DMR-023, this 2005 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays medium spread West as an extra double column on the 7th pillar, visible from the shoulder to the hand and from the elbow to the knee of the Lincoln statue. Four die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B with the reverse in Early to Mid Die State and a die crack on the forehead and upper hair on the obverse in Mid Die State; Stage C in Mid Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage D in Late Die State (unconfirmed). Extra column doubled die reverses are among the most popular varieties on Lincoln Memorial cents, as the secondary architectural impressions are often visible without magnification. The westward spread on column 7 produces a shadow pillar effect along the statue's profile. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at Philadelphia, the 2005 cent was produced in the final years of the Memorial reverse before the 2009 bicentennial program and subsequent Shield reverse replaced it. Stage B specimens offer the best attribution confidence, with the obverse die crack on the forehead confirming the die pair.
