2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-015
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2956 and DMR-017, DDR-015 on the 2005 Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits a very strong spread rotated approximately 70 degrees counterclockwise, visible as an extra column number 6 in the pedestal extending through the legs of the Lincoln statue seated inside the Memorial. Rotated CCW doubling at such a steep angle is relatively uncommon and produces a dramatic visual effect, as the secondary ghost image of the column appears at a noticeably different orientation than the primary design. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state, presenting the cleanest and most sharply defined doubling; Stage B at mid-die state, currently unconfirmed and requiring additional specimens; and Stage C at late die state, also unconfirmed, where progressive die wear would be expected to partially obscure the doubling effect while potentially introducing die cracks and flow lines. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, with its columned facade and the tiny statue of Lincoln visible within the central bay, was particularly susceptible to dramatic doubled die effects because the numerous parallel vertical columns amplified even modest hub shifts into clearly visible secondary images. The fifteenth DDR cataloged for the 2005 cent speaks to the intense scrutiny that variety researchers applied to this date, examining millions of coins from Philadelphia's annual output of billions.
