2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008

Description

Strong spread southwest producing an extra column number seven from elbow to foot height, along with doubled knees on the Lincoln statue, makes this eighth cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2005 Lincoln Memorial Cent one of the more visually dramatic varieties in the late Memorial Cent series. The Lincoln Memorial reverse by Frank Gasparro features the miniature seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, and column-level doubling creates the striking visual of a ghost column appearing beside the original — one of the most collectible DDR effects in the denomination. VarietyVista tracked this variety under UVC-2905 and DMR-010 with three die stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, while Stage B (MDS) and Stage C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The southwest directional spread and the strong intensity distinguish DDR-008 from the other seven cataloged DDRs for the 2005 date. The 2005 production year was the second-to-last for the copper-plated zinc Memorial Cent before the 2009 Bicentennial designs intervened and the 2010 Shield Cent became permanent. Column doubling combined with the doubled knee detail on the tiny seated Lincoln figure provides multiple diagnostic reference points for attribution.
