Description

Part of the Westward Journey series commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition, DDR-057 of the 2005 Philadelphia "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel shows a medium spread with light hubbing south of the first and second lowest left branches of the right tree in Joe Fitzgerald's Pacific Northwest landscape reverse. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1659 (DMR-060), this variety carries a Stage A die gouge dot inside the upper right O of OCEAN as a diagnostic marker. The reverse captures the expedition's triumphant arrival at the Pacific Coast, with trees framing the ocean vista — and it is within these branches that the doubling manifests. Production notes indicate this variety can be found with the Satin Mint Set finish, meaning examples may appear in official 2005 Uncirculated Mint Sets with their distinctive matte-like surface from specially burnished planchets. The sheer number of DDR varieties for this design — DDR-057 reaching well past fifty — reflects the complexity of the tree-and-landscape motif, which provides numerous fine elements capable of registering hub doubling. Satin finish examples offer collectors a different visual presentation of the same variety.
