2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-044

Description

Extra strong spread in a westward direction of the trunk and third branch between the lowest three branches of the right tree characterizes this forty-fourth doubled die reverse for the 2005 Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey "American Bison" or "Ocean in View" design. Die markers include UVC-1630 and DMR-047, with Stage A showing a light die gouge between the lower 05 of 1805 in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed at mid and late die state respectively. The notation "SMS — Can be found in Mint Sets" indicates this variety has been identified in Satin Finish Mint Set specimens, which received a distinctive satin surface treatment rather than the standard business strike finish. The 2005 Westward Journey series celebrated the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the reverse designs featuring natural landscape elements — including trees with detailed branch structures — provided unusually rich surfaces for hub doubling to manifest.
