Description

Concentrated west of the second branch of the right tree on the Bison reverse, DDR-041 of the 2005 Jefferson Nickel, part of the Westward Journey series commemorating Lewis and Clark's expedition. The right tree is a prominent landscape element, and the westward spread displaces branch detail into the adjacent field, creating a visible secondary impression alongside the primary design. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1625 and DMR-044, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows a die gouge above the dot between the date 1805 and FIVE in early-to-mid die state along with a die chip on the nose tip and a die crack on the upper lip, Stage B at mid-die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C awaits confirmation. The 1805 date references the year the expedition reached the Pacific coast. The multiple early-stage die markers, including the nose chip and upper lip crack, indicate this die was already showing wear at an early point. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Philadelphia, this Westward Journey Bison Nickel documents strong branch doubling with extensive confirming die markers.
