Description

This 2005 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel features the DDR-032 doubled die reverse on the special Westward Journey Bison design, a one-year reverse type designed by Jamie Franki depicting an American Buffalo. The doubling shows a very strong spread directed West, visible as extra thickness on the tree trunk and the first and second branches of the right tree in the landscape scene. Die marriage DMR-035 in Stage A shows Early Die State, with diagnostic markers including several die gouge dots between the upper IE of VIEW and a small slanted die gouge at the rim above the E of WE. This variety can be found in Satin Finish examples from 2005 Mint Sets. The Bison reverse was one of two special designs issued in 2005 to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition, and its single-year production generated intense collector interest, yielding at least 32 documented doubled die reverse varieties for this design alone.
