2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-029

Description

Featuring strong spread with light hubbing to the left of the third branch on the right tree of the Monticello landscape, this 2005-P Bison Jefferson Nickel DDR-029 is a regular-strike variety from the Westward Journey Nickel Series. The strong spread classification indicates a clearly visible secondary impression, though the light hubbing qualifier notes that the overall depth of the design transfer was shallow, creating an interesting combination of wide displacement with subtle relief. This variety boasts unusually rich die stage documentation across its production life. In Stage A at early die state, a slanted die gouge appears under the 8 of 1805 on the reverse, with the obverse also in early die state. By Stage B at mid-die state, a small die chip has developed in the W of the DW designer initials, accompanied by a die break in the E of LIBERTY on the obverse — demonstrating progressive die deterioration. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed, suggesting that either the die was retired before reaching advanced deterioration or late-state specimens have not yet been identified.
