2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-026
Error
Description
Bearing the VarietyVista catalog designations UVC-1584 and DMR-029, this 2005 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse belongs to the Westward Journey series featuring the iconic American Bison design by Jamie Franki. A medium spread is visible on the lower left branches of the right tree. What distinguishes this variety is its four-stage die state documentation. Stage A shows both sides in an early die state. Stage B develops a diagonal die crack through the 0 of 1805, a die chip in the W of the DW designer's initials, a die crack on the upper lip at mid-die state, and die chips on the tip of the nose. Stage C progresses to a larger die chip in the DW initials at late mid-die state. Stage D represents a late die state, though unconfirmed. This four-stage progression provides researchers with a detailed chronological record of die deterioration. The 2005 Bison Nickel was a business strike produced as part of the program commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition, and twenty-six documented DDRs for this single design reflect intense scrutiny.
