2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-023

Description

One of only two reverse designs to appear on the Jefferson Nickel during the 2005 Westward Journey series, the Bison reverse by Jamie Franki was a one-year-only design — and DDR-023 documents hub doubling on this fleeting issue. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1581 and DMR-026, this business strike shows medium spread visible as a portion of the lowest left branch of the right tree flanking the bison. The doubling on tree branches is characteristic of how hub displacement affects fine linear details: even a small shift creates a visible ghost branch alongside the original. The 2005 Bison reverse, paired with Joe Fitzgerald's forward-facing Jefferson obverse (also new for 2005), honored the Lewis and Clark expedition's encounters with the American bison. This two-design year — Bison reverse in the first half and Ocean in View in the second — makes varieties from either design more limited than those on the standard Monticello reverse. Struck on 75% copper and 25% nickel at 21.2mm. Locate the lowest left branch of the right tree and examine for medium spread showing the doubled branch contour alongside the original.
