Description

Found on Satin Finish specimens from 2005 U.S. Mint uncirculated sets, DDR-003 on the Jefferson Nickel Bison reverse captures a doubled die variety on Jamie Franki's Westward Journey design depicting the American bison. The Satin Finish surface treatment applied to mint set coins from 2005 through 2010 produced a distinctive matte luster that differs markedly from both standard business strikes and mirror-finish proofs, and doubled die diagnostics can present differently against this texture. Die markers cataloged as UVC-1563 and DMR-008 identify three die states: Stage A with both the reverse and obverse in early die state, plus unconfirmed Stage B and Stage C in mid-die and late die states. Philadelphia Mint production. The 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series generated intense collector interest with its temporary departure from Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, and variety specialists scrutinized mint set coins closely, leading to the documentation of multiple doubled die varieties on both the Bison and Ocean in View designs.
