Description

Struck as part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series, this 2005-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-001 is listed by VarietyVista as UVC-1608 and DMR-003 and was produced at the Denver Mint, featuring Joe Fitzgerald's American Bison reverse design for 2005. The doubling manifests as strong spread but with light hubbing above the first left branch and below the third left branch on the right tree in the landscape behind the bison. These organic landscape shapes show subtle but measurable displacement in the tree branches where doubled die impressions register. The Westward Journey series celebrated the Lewis and Clark expedition's bicentennial with special reverse designs in 2004 and 2005, departing from Felix Schlag's traditional Monticello reverse and giving variety collectors entirely new design elements to examine for hub doubling. The Bison reverse operated for only one year, limiting the total number of die pairs and making DDR-001 specific to this single-year design type. Doubled dies on special-issue reverses attract collectors interested in both the variety itself and the limited production window of the host design.
