Description

Medium spread southwest creating an extra column number seven from elbow to ankle, accompanied by a doubled knee on the seated Lincoln statue, defines this twenty-fourth doubled die reverse for the 2004 Lincoln Memorial Cent. The Lincoln Memorial reverse by Frank Gasparro features twelve columns across the facade with the miniature seated Lincoln visible between the central columns, and column-area doubling produces some of the series' most visually distinctive DDR effects — a phantom column appearing alongside the original that is detectable even at moderate magnification. VarietyVista cataloged this variety under UVC-2896 and DMR-027 with three die stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in Early Die State, while Stage B (MDS) and Stage C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The southwest directional spread parallels DDR-008 from 2005, suggesting a similar hub displacement mechanism may have been at work across production years. Twenty-four documented DDRs for the 2004 date reflects the sustained pace of die variety research on late Memorial Cents, as the series entered its final years before the 2009 Bicentennial program.
