Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista as DDR-022 under UVC-2894 and DMR-025, this 2004 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows a strong spread Northwest, manifesting as an extra column 7 visible from the elbow to the pedestal and an extra foot between the statue's legs. The die progressed through four stages. Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B is EMDS, marked specifically by a die chip on the upper E of CENT and a die crack from the rim through the E of ONE, with the obverse remaining EDS at this stage. Stage C is MDS (unconfirmed) and Stage D is LDS (unconfirmed). The strong Northwest spread on column 7 and the ghost foot between Lincoln's legs make this variety visually compelling. The Stage B die chip on the E of CENT and the crack through E of ONE are useful confirmation markers even on lightly circulated examples where doubling itself may be partially worn. Lincoln Memorial cents of 2004 are struck in copper-plated zinc at Philadelphia. The VarietyVista UVC-2894 and DMR-025 reference codes integrate this variety into the doubled die cross-reference system used across the Memorial cent series.
