2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017
Error
Description
Tracked by VarietyVista with identifiers UVC-2889 and DMR-020, this 2004 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse displays medium westward spread manifesting as an extra double lower column number 7, with the doubling visible from the knee to shin and shin to pedestal areas of the Memorial design. The architectural doubling creates a ghost column effect where a secondary column image appears offset from the primary, providing a bold visual diagnostic within the building's colonnade. Three die stages are documented: Stage A shows the reverse in early die state, with the obverse exhibiting a long die crack in the back of Lincoln's hair at late-mid die state. Stage B and Stage C represent mid die state and late die state respectively, both unconfirmed. The obverse hair crack at Stage A offers a secondary diagnostic for confirming the die pair on earlier-state specimens. Among Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled dies, varieties that produce doubled architectural elements in the Memorial building tend to be more visually dramatic than those limited to inscription spread, and DDR-017's extra column ranks among the more compelling examples.
