Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2839 and DMR-011, this 2004 Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-008 presents a visually dramatic variety with very strong spread southeast on column #6 from the elbow to the pedestal, producing an extra hand and an extra knee between the feet of the seated Lincoln statue within the Memorial's colonnade. The extra hand and knee are among the most visually compelling doubling manifestations possible on the Memorial Cent design, as they create clearly recognizable anatomical duplications on the tiny but detailed statue visible between the central columns of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (EDS) showing a small die chip in the middle of column #2 and a die crack on the forehead developing by MDS; Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The "very strong" spread classification indicates the extra hand and knee are readily visible under standard magnification, making this one of the more dramatic doubled die varieties within the 2004 Lincoln Memorial Cent population. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm, the Lincoln Memorial Cent design's intricate architectural detail — including the tiny seated Lincoln statue between columns — provides particularly interesting doubled die manifestations because the human figure's recognizable anatomy makes doubling immediately identifiable as extra body parts rather than abstract separated lines. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait pairs with Gasparro's Memorial reverse, which served from 1959 through 2008.
