Description

VarietyVista cataloged this 2004 Lincoln Memorial cent as DDR-007, a doubled die reverse exhibiting a very strong spread to the south creating an extra set of Lincoln's knees in the pedestal area, accompanied by a light spread to the east producing an extra lower column number 6 at the pedestal level. The copper-plated zinc cent weighs 2.5 grams and measures 19 mm in diameter, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Tracked under Universal Variety Code UVC-2822 and Die Marker Reference DMR-010, this variety progresses through three documented die states: Stage A where both the reverse and obverse are in early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The "very strong" southward spread creating an entirely extra set of knees places this among the more dramatic Lincoln Memorial doubled die reverses, as the seated Lincoln statue's knee area is a feature that collectors can locate and examine relatively quickly. The secondary eastward spread on the lower portion of column 6 provides confirmation that this is a multi-directional hub doubling event rather than simple mechanical doubling from the striking process. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, used from 1959 through 2008, contains the remarkably detailed miniature Lincoln statue within the Memorial's central chamber, and the intersection of the statue with the surrounding columns creates a zone where doubled die effects produce some of the most visually compelling varieties in the entire Lincoln cent series. This variety is part of the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series.
