2004-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Showing a medium spread to the east, this fifth documented doubled die reverse for the 2004 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent creates an extra column 6 from the statue's shoulder to the pedestal, along with an extra knee between the existing knees of the seated Lincoln figure. The eastward directional spread means the hub shifted to the right between impressions, displacing design elements laterally. Column 6 and the knee area are among the most diagnostic locations for doubling on the Memorial reverse because the fine vertical lines and seated posture provide clear reference points where even slight displacement becomes detectable. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-2986 and DMR-006, the variety is tracked across three die states: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early-to-mid die state, Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 2004-D cent was among the final Denver Mint issues of the Memorial reverse, replaced after 2008 by the four-design Lincoln Bicentennial program. Five doubled die reverses for a single Denver date demonstrates active variety research on late-era Memorial Cents.
